Young lady, I was born and raised an hour south of Pittsburgh and no matter where I've lived, my accent and more specifically my slang ALWAYS give away my origin. Texas? You mean where the cowgirls are from? 🤬 Well you do have Pittsburgh ties so there is a SLIGHT chance it can be overlooked... MAYBE.

If asked “Jeet yet?” A common Pittsburgh would be “No, ju?” And if neither of yunz had eaten then the next logical suggestion would be “Then let’s squeet!” ( Let’s go eat!) 😂

Grew up close to Pittsburgh and one phrase I never heard was "redd up". Sweeper(vacuum clearer), pop, jagger bush, jag/jagoff, chipped ham, city chicken, crick(instead of creek), hoagie, gumband, slippy, nebby, spicket, buggy, dippy, gutcheez, drug(instead of dragged) I've heard. Apparently the grammer is different, like "How’s about?" or "The grass needs cut". A big one when I was a kid was "Kennywood's open" meaning your fly is down.

I get crap for the words house, iron, downear, root and roof. We say em correctly. Every one else is wrong.

Most Pittsburgh area people who use a plural form of "you" (even in videos that tell you that the word is "yinz" - hence the term, "Yinzer") are actually saying "yunz" as often and as naturally as "yinz". I grew up in "Pixburgh", and knew people who said "yunz"; but knew exactly nobody who said "yinz" (yes, really). Go figure! Some terms, especially redd up, (as in "redd up the house") were close to universal in the whole area. Some terms were spotty.

Moved to Pittsburgh in 1963 from eastern Canada (Nova Scotia) and Pittsburghese was the first American accent/language I ever heard. To this day, I recognize it instantly. In fact, people who display these traits are shocked when I ask them what part of Pittsburgh they are from. It's easy to tell! Even as immigrants our Mom picked right up on the wooden spoon treatment!

When someone first tried to explain pittsburghese, the example was "Jeet yet?" which means "did you eat yet?". If you just relax and let the words flow, the saying make sense, but if you listen too carefully or analytically then you will be stumped.

That Jagoff that called you a Jagoff could ALSO be from Chicago. These are the only cities where this is a valid "diss".

Fun word facts: In Philadelpha you can get a "hoagie" and a "soda". In Chicago you can get a "sub" and a "pop". Only in Pittsburgh is a "hoagie" and a "pop" a valid order! despite all of them describing THE SAME THINGS. PS: If someone calls you a "jagoff", they are ONLY from ONE of TWO cities: Pittsburgh or Chicago!

I worked in Ohio. One day one of the guys says, "Tell Bobby here to go downtown" Im like what? When I said it, I realized I say "dawntawn" Never even clicked I spoke that way. Also I told my daughter, Hey look at the baby bunny near the jagger bush.

I’m so jealous! I’m a NC native and still live here. However, I came out a Stiller fan in 1974, and I’ll die one.
